Across CARICOM member states, home-care agencies and residential settings for seniors and vulnerable adults commonly rely on staff trained in first aid and CPR. Because continuing requirements are set nationally rather than region-wide, first-aid and CPR training for care staff is generally expected by employers and agencies rather than fixed by a single harmonized regulation.

The first-aid requirement

Care staff are commonly required or expected by home-care agencies and employers to hold a current CPR and first-aid certificate so they can act with adults in an emergency; formal college and NVQ care-aide programmes embed first aid instead. There is little uniform region-wide regulation, so the exact expectation is set locally.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid certificate is the way to meet this expectation; it is in addition to the worker's occupational training and should be renewed periodically.
